Crab Salad Stuffed Pita Pockets

The relaxation is really starting to hit me now and let me tell you, it is awesome! Day 2 of officially being on holiday and I already feel recharged. We've been waking up without an alarm clock, going for leisurely morning strolls around the neighborhood, picniking in the afternoons and catching up with family or a good book in the evenings.

Roast Aubergine Tart with Caramelised Red Onions

Now doesn't that look festive? A great contender for all those relaxed lunches that lie ahead in the next few days of celebrations. Let the countdown to Christmas begin! And let me tell you, it tastes just as good eaten straight out of the fridge. Not that I would ever... um... do that.

Orange, Olive & Red Onion Salad

Photo of Orange, Olive and Red Onion Salad

S. Alad, meet Blog universe. Blog universe - meet my favourite salad. The combination sounds strange I'll admit (I  mean come on  - oranges and olives? You're kidding, right?), but man oh man do they work well together. I could seriously inhale eat this salad day in and day out. By the truckload bowlful. The chocolate peanut butter cups in the fridge are even looking worried that this salad will dethrone them as The One and Only in my heart & tummy. I'll be honest, it's a very real risk.

Daring Cooks - Salmon En Croute

I'm not a big pastry person. Chocolate - yes, bring it on. But pastry? Meh. I can take it or leave it. Most often I abandon the pastry in favour of the filling. So when I saw this:

"The December 2009 Daring Cooks challenge was hosted by Simone of Junglefrog Cooking. Simone chose Salmon en Croute (or alternative recipes for Beef Wellington or Vegetable en Croute) from Good Food Online."

I kind of quivered in my boots a little bit. Because see, not only am I not a big pastry eater, I'm also not a big pastry maker. But, I reasoned, that's exactly the point of the Daring Kitchen. To step out of our comfort zones. To go boldly where no (wo)man has gone before! Or so it felt.

Bibimbap

You know how sometimes everything seems to go wrong in the kitchen?

Well I had one of those experiences last night. We were going to bbq some chicken and I had a coleslaw in mind as side-dish. But when I peeked into the fridge Mr Limp & Listless was peeking out from the vegetable crisper (now there's a misnomer if I've ever heard one!), and so the coleslaw idea was tossed out.

Oregano Chicken Skewers

Summer calls for swanning around in next-to-nothings, sultry sounds and sipping on colourful cocktails. It also calls for skewered food. Can you hear it? Skeeeeeeeeeeeeee-weeeeeeeeeeeeeeers. Okay maybe that's just me.

Aubergine, Bulghur & Lentil Salad with Fresh Salsa

Things I love about Christmas:
  • Christmas cheer (and Christmas carols!)
  • Spoiling my loved ones
  • Sunny days & the prospect of achieving that elusive bronze glow (okay who am I kidding on this one... I'm usually the one who blinds the rest of humanity with my still snow white legs by the end of summer)
  • (Over)indulging in food of every kind and, more to the point, sinful desserts of every kind

Greek Fennel & Potato Salad

Photo of Greek Fennel & Potato Salad

Gutsy isn't a word I'd normally use to describe a salad. That's just because I've never had a fennel salad before. Fennel is another one of those ingredients I've seen lurking in the grocery store, but haven't really explored properly. I've tried it in cooked form before, but I found the flavour to be slightly... lacking. I was expecting a stronger flavour and that is not what you get from cooked fennel. Raw fennel is a completely different story though.

Okra Fried Rice

Photo of Okra Fried Rice

You know what is clearly impossible to find in this town? Five-spice powder. Seriously people, I'm missing out on lots of cool recipes because of this lack of five-spiciness. I might be forced into some hardcore protesting outside my local grocery store when next I am unable to find said spice. But for now I'm going to live and let live, eat my okra fried rice and smile beatifically if anyone dares comment on it's lack of five-spiciness (as per the original recipe).
