Tempura


Aaah Japan. Home of anime, fashionable teens, martial art and geishas. And of course the food: sushi, fragrant miso soup, chewy udon noodles, pretty-in-pink pickled ginger, sticky rice and tofu. And even though I love all of the above (miiiiiiiissssoooo), I can see how it can be slightly intimadating for the average, slightly unadventurous Westerner. After all, raw fish and fermented bean curd isn't quite in our frame of reference. We tend to focus more on hamburgers, hotdogs and pizza. You know, the more substantial things in life.

Some things just grab you, know what I mean? In my case it's chocolate, endless repeats of my favourite girly guilty pleasure movies (Ten Things I Hate About You and Dirty Dancing for the curious amongst you), and seeing our kitten curled up in a ball on the couch. Cuteness, thy name is JD.

The experts will tell you that babies don't like spicy foods, so pregnant women are encouraged to avoid spicy foods, breastfeeding moms are warned to avoid garlic like the plague and moms of toddlers are told to prepare spice-less versions of the food they're eating for their young 'uns.
